Today was a great opportunity to learn more about Public Relations. Amy Paul, a former student of Professor Knabe's, came to our PR Tactics class today! It was wonderful to hear someone elses story about how they got into their internships and profession and how much they enjoy it. She started off as a music major and then decided she wanted to do something else. She went for PR instead, and succeeded! The fact that she was fresh out of college and was able to put herself out there and get hired gave me hope. She talked about her work with the Milwaukee Admirals, as well as how planned a memorial event for 9/11 for Milwaukee County. She's taken countless internships, even being a brand ambassador for Qdoba and a social media manager for the Whitewater Cinema when she worked there.
My question to her had to do with how to make yourself stand out; whether it be through your resume or the like. She told me to include volunteer time to show how devoted you are to causes, and to also internship before you jump straight into anything. I'm so glad she came to class and I hope to work with her in the future if possible.

Yes, I agree it gave me a little ray of hope to know she got a job within two months of graduating college! I'm really glad Amy emphasized that volunteer work is important not for yourself but to show future employers you can dedicate time to someone else in your free time.
ReplyDeleteAmy had a lot of great advice! I agree that it was inspiring to hear from someone who is a recent PR graduate. She has been where we are right now so she is a great person to give advice. I think volunteering is definitely something that stands out to employers so I’m glad she mentioned it!
ReplyDeleteIt definitely is helpful and encouraging to get insight from someone who just graduated. Especially in this job market when everything is so competitive. Amy presented herself like a professional and offered a lot of helpful advice, thank you Amy!
ReplyDeleteThe three things I have heard as a PR student a hundred times are 1.NETWORK 2.INTERNSHIPS 3.GET INVOLVED. Funny thing, Amy mentioned them as well! It is great to hear that it is true. We have proof from an UWW student, a recent graduate and someone who is working in the real world.
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more that internships are the key to our success in the future. I was impressed with how many internships she had and the fact that they were all unpaid shows her commitment and dedication to what she does.
ReplyDeleteJenny,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Amy's opinion on volunteer work. I myself have been able to give my time to Whitewater's community through volunteer work. I have learned so much during my work while having a lot of fun. Great question Jenny!!
